Plante vivace de 1 à 2 mètres, glabre, un peu glauque, très aromatique, à souche épaisse; tiges robustes, striées, rameuses.
Écologie : (répartition d'après la flore) Lieux arides dans tout le Midi et l'Ouest, et çà et là dans le reste de la France; Corse.
Répartition hors de France : Europe centrale et méridionale; Asie occidentale ; Afrique septentrionale,

A stout, strongly-scented perennial with much-branched, smooth, green, erect stems 30-75 cm high, growing from a thick rootstock. 
Ecology UK: (distribution according to flora) It is found on sea cliffs and also as a relic of cultivation on waste ground elsewhere in central, S. England and Wales.
