Plante polymorphe. Vivace de 10-60 cm, verte, noircissant, à souche verticale courte; hampes anguleuses, sillonnées, pubescentes ou glabrescentes, dépassant beaucoup les feuilles;
Écologie : (répartition d'après la flore) Prés et pâturages, dans toute la France et en Corse.
Répartition hors de France : Europe; Asie occidentale; Afrique septentrionale; introduit dans les autres zones.

A rather stout perennial with flowering scapes 5-60 cm long, growing from an ascending cluster of narrow leaves and a thick, erect stock.

Fleurs : épi ovoïde ou oblong, glabre ; bractées ovales-acuminées, noirâtres sur le dos; sépales latéraux à calice un peu poilue; corolle blanchâtre, glabre, à lobes ovales; anthères blanches;
